About Gatwick Airport

Gatwick Airport, commonly referred to as London Gatwick Airport, is the second largest and second busiest international airport in the United Kingdom, after Heathrow Airport. In terms of passenger numbers, it is the 28th busiest airport in the world. The airport is located 28 miles south of Central London.

Gatwick Airport has two terminals (‘North’ and ‘South’). Both terminals have numerous restaurants and shops to visit, reflecting the size of the airport. Disabled passengers can travel through all areas and good children’s facilities are present, including play areas for children. As well as boasting standard business lounges, there is a lounge for Leisure travellers – V Lounge – as well as an independent pay-for-access lounge called No.1 Gatwick.

The busiest route from Gatwick Airport is to Malaga Airport, in Spain, with over 1.1 million passengers in 2009. Dublin, Faro, Alicante and Orlando make up the other spots in the top 5 busiest routes.

BAA Ltd (British Airports Authority) owned and operated Gatwick for several decades until 2009. The company was pressurised into the sale following a report by the Competition Commission, which found that BAA had too much market dominance in London and the South East of England. Global Infrastructure Partners bought Gatwick Air for £1.51 billion. The firm now own both Gatwick Airport and London City Airport.
