About Stansted Airport

Stansted Airport, officially called London Stansted Airport, is the United Kingdom’s third largest airport. It is located around 40 miles from Central London, near a village called Stansted Mountifitchet.

The facilities there are comparable to those at Gatwick, with a wide range of shops and restaurants to choose from. There is only one passenger terminal, based in a building which features a ‘floating roof’, which is designed to create the impression of a swan in flight.

Stansted is a hub for several major European low-cost carriers. Ryanair in particular has a big presence at Stansted, serving over 100 destinations from the airport. Stansted’s busiest route is Dublin Airport, with over 700,000 visitors handled in 2009. After Dublin is Alicante Airport, with around half this number of visitors, followed by Rome, Edinburgh and Milan. During the last decade, due to a boom in low cost air travel, Stansted experienced a rapid increase in passenger numbers, peaking at 24 million in 2007. Since 2007, passenger numbers have been in decline, in part due to the global economic crisis.

Stansted is owned and operated by the British Airports Authority (BAA Ltd).
