What’s on in London for January 2017


Happy New Year to everyone, this month has plenty going on, so if you have recovered from the festivities, then let’s go with a fully packed list of things to do and see. Listed below are our pick of the month with a little something for everybody.

No 1. 1st January 2017 “London’s New Year’s Day Parade 2017”. Watch the spectacular New Year’s Day Parade along the streets of Central London this New Year’s Day. Every year, dancers, acrobats, cheerleaders, marching bands, historic vehicles and more assemble in the heart of the capital for a colourful celebration of contemporary performances and traditional pomp and ceremony. With more than 8,000 performers representing the London boroughs and countries from across the globe, this fantastic event attracts around 500,000 spectators and live television broadcasts in the UK and abroad. The parade is themed ‘Lights, Camera, Action’, featuring film and TV-themed displays and performances, with huge balloons, music and confetti filling the air. Catch the festivities along the parade route, which runs from Green Park Tube station at 12pm, to Parliament Square at around 3.30pm, via Piccadilly Circus, Lower Regent Street, Pall Mall, Trafalgar Square and Whitehall.

No 2. 6th to 15th January 2017 “London Boat Show” at ExCeL London. London’s biggest annual boat show brings together experts, traders and celebrities from the world of boating and watersports to showcase the latest nautical trends and upcoming developments at the waterfront location. Some of the highlights this year are: Listening to celebrity speakers including record-breaking yachtswoman Dee Caffari and Olympic medallist Saskia Clark hosted by Sky Sports presenter Alec Wilkinson. Try out kayaking and zorbing on the Boating Lake, or watch the demos from the bar. Get up close to the superb yachts moored in the Dream Lodge Marina which also features tempting dining options. No.3. 11th to 22nd January 2017 “English National Ballet: Giselle” at London Coliseum. Giselle is a haunting story of innocence and betrayal, a timeless tale about the redemptive power of love. A young peasant girl, Giselle, is in love with the handsome Albrecht, a Duke who hides from her his nobility and his engagement to another. When she discovers he has deceived her, she is driven to madness, and dies of a broken heart. The vengeful spirits of abandoned brides gather by her grave, ready to welcome Giselle into their fold, and force men to dance to their death. Will Giselle’s love protect Albrecht from his fate? Moving from the sunny optimism of Giselle’s idyllic village life to a moonlit world of mystery and menace, Mary Skeaping’s production of Giselle features some of ballet’s most dramatic scenes and otherworldly images. No.4. 12th January to 26th February 2017 “Cirque du Soleil: Amaluna” at Royal Albert Hall. With a cast made up almost exclusively of female performers, the show puts women and their voice at the centre of the story, in a spectacle of awesome acrobatics, elegant aerial acts and breathtaking staging. Inspired by Greek and Norse mythology, as well as Mozart’s The Magic Flute and Shakespeare’s The Tempest, the magnificent production tells the story of Queen Prospera and her daughter on the mysterious island of Amaluna. As the queen creates a storm after her daughter’s coming-of-age ceremony, a rite that celebrates femininity, renewal and balance, a group of young men are washed up on the island. A romance ensues between Prospera’s daughter and one of the young suitors, but their love story is met by trials and setbacks which will test the young couple’s trust and affection. No.5. 18th to 22nd January 2017 “London Art Fair 2017” at Business Design Centre. Kicking off the art world year, the annual fair brings together more than 125 galleries to showcase museum-quality contemporary artworks and pieces from today’s leading artists. There’s also two specially curated sections beyond the main fair focusing on new works, less established galleries, and contemporary photography. Featuring works from the early 20th century to the present day, and covering everything from photography and sculpture to painting and ceramics, there’s guaranteed to be something here to thrill art lovers of all tastes and levels of experience. No.6. 25th January 2017 “Burns Night in London”. Eat, drink and dance to celebrate Scotland’s national bard on Burns Night in London. Born in 1759, Robert Burns was a Scottish poet and lyricist who became a national icon. Burns Night is marked with a traditional supper on or around the anniversary of his birth, 25 January, in Scotland and across the UK. Many London restaurants and bars hold Burns Night events, serving up Scottish suppers of haggis and tatties with Scottish whisky. More elaborate celebrations are also accompanied by poetry reading, toasts and bagpipe music, and the evening occasionally ends with traditional dancing. Feast on a special Burns Night menu at Boisdale between 17 and 25 January, from Highland salmon and Aberdeenshire beef, to Scottish broth, haggis and tatties; or celebrate with Frank and Dean’s Burns Night Hootenanny at Boisdale Canary Wharf from 25 to 27 January. Don’t miss a trip to one of London’s best whisky bars to raise a toast to Burns with a wee dram.

No.7.   28th January to 22nd April “The Girls” at Phoenix Theatre. Catch Gary Barlow and Tim Firth’s inspiring new musical. Based on a true story, The Girls sees a determined group of ladies deciding to appear nude for the calendar of a Women’s Institute in order to raise funds to buy a settee for their local hospital, in memory of one of their husbands. Will their efforts raise enough money to buy the chair? Discover the hilarious impact of their decision on their husbands and families, this show has already been made into a movie, Tim Firth’s celebrated film “Calendar Girls”. No.8. 29th January 2017 “Chinese New Year 2017” in Trafalagar Square. Celebrate the Year of the Rooster in London, with the biggest Chinese New Year celebrations outside Asia. Every year, hundreds of thousands of people descend on the West End to wish each other “Xin Nian Kuai Le” (Happy New Year in Mandarin) or “San Nin Faai Lok” (in Cantonese). The day usually kicks off with a colourful Chinese parade that snakes its way through the streets of the West End, followed by stage performances in Trafalgar Square, including traditional dance troupes, acrobats, dragon and flying lion dances, opera and martial arts acts. The grand finale in Trafalgar Square ends the Chinese New Year celebrations with fireworks and a spectacular show.

No.9.   29th to 31st January 2017 “Black Sabbath: The End” at The O2. The multi-award winning and influential unit fronted by cult icon Ozzy Osbourne plays metal and rock as part of its final tour.
