What’s on in London for August 2012

london summer airport transfersLondon is now fully into the Olympics and if you are reading this from abroad I am sure you have been watching the events as they happen on TV. London is bursting at the seams, the traffic is already suffering from lane closures and everywhere is taking longer to get to than usual. However, the atmosphere is exciting and warm and everyone is having a great time. If you are coming this month to join in then you are in for a treat, even though sport is the dominant feature this month there is still plenty of Music, Film, and Carnival to look forward to and enjoy. Listed below are our top ten events to enjoy.

No. 1. 1st till 12th August “The 2012 London Olympic Games” held at various venues all over London and of course at the main Olympic Stadium at Stratford.

No 2. 1st till 12th August “ BT London Live in Victoria Park”

Held at Victoria Park , watch all the London 2012 Olympic Games action and see a diverse programme of entertainment for free in . You won’t miss a minute of the Olympic action on your visit to thanks to the venue’s two giant screens, plus smaller televisions in the Sports Bar. If you’d prefer something a bit more active, however, you can head to the Have-A-Go-Sports-Zone, where you can try a range of Olympic and Paralympic sports with professional coaching. For a small fee, you’ll also be able to ride the BT Observation Wheel, swish down the 320-metre zipline or try water zorbing. On top of the electric atmosphere of the Games, the park will also be a wash with sound thanks to an exciting line-up of musical performers, including Alexandra Burke, the Jive Aces and DJ Norman Jay and friends. The renowned Club De Fromage will also be taking over an area of the park, serving up music, karaoke and silly games alongside their trademark humour.

No 3. 3rd to 12 August “Jamaica House” at The O2 .Opens daily: 16:00 – 00:00

Celebrate all things Jamaican at the Jamaica national house. Every day from 16:00 till late, enjoy Jamaican cultural events including food, fashion, music as well as shopping. Other events at the venue include Jamaican comedy and music gigs and exhibitions.

No. 4. 12th August 2012 “London 2012 Olympic Games Closing Ceremony”

Be amazed by the Closing Ceremony of the Olympic Games as the city bids farewell to the London 2012 Olympic Games. The Ceremony will bring the London 2012 Olympic to an end on a high with a dazzling performance. The Olympic flame will then be sent on its route to Brazil for the 2016 Olympics.

No.5. 12th August “BT London Live Closing Ceremony Celebration Concert” Held in Hyde Park from 2:30 PM – 12:30 AM. See Blur, New Order and The Specials perform in Hyde Park Don’t miss Damon Albarn, Alex James, Graham Coxon and Dave Rowntree as they reunite for this historic gig to mark the Olympic Games Closing Ceremony. You can watch all the Olympic and Paralympic action free of charge on big screens in the Park.

No. 6. 16th to 27th August “Film4 Summer Screen at Somerset House 2012”

London’s cinema under the stars returns with a varied programme of films, screened in beautiful surroundings. This year’s programme kicks off with the UK premiere of On The Road, a film adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s classic novel, starring Kristen Stewart, Sam Riley and Garrett Hedlund. Film 4’s Summer Screen has become a major summer attraction in London for anyone looking for some relaxed open air entertainment. The stunning backdrop of this venue is transformed into an open air cinema for a short time once again. You can bring rugs, cushions and blankets to make yourself comfortable in the courtyard. Food and drink is available and picnics are also allowed. Film 4 Summer Screen Season Programme 2012 has a diverse programme including recent box-office hits, classic films, Saturday night double bills. Highlights include: On The Road (16 Aug), The Birds (17 Aug), Apocalypse Now (20 Aug), Boogie Nights and Beyond the Valley of the Dolls double feature (24 Aug), Sexy Beast (25 Aug), Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (26 Aug)

Film screenings take place at 9.15pm, with DJs from 7.30pm. Film buffs can buy tickets to interesting Behind The Screen talks which take place before the film, at 6.30pm.

No.7. 19th August “02 London Mela 2012” at Gunnersbury Park and Museum

Head to Gunnersbury Park for a free festival of Asian culture, featuring live performances, a colourful carnival and an exciting firework finale. Now in its 10th year, the London Mela is a spectacular celebration of Asian culture, modelled on traditional South Asian festivals.Expect a riot of colour and sound as thousands of people descend on the Venue to enjoy a wide range of music, arts and food, spread across nine zones.

No.8 24th till 27th August “ Notting Hill Carnival” Takes Over West London

The streets come alive every August Bank Holiday weekend as London celebrates Europe’s biggest street festival – the Notting Hill Carnival. With a Caribbean theme that sees West London packed with steel bands, Calypso music and tempting food stalls, the Carnival is a huge party. And everyone is invited! Expect a sea of colour as amazing floats and costumed performers wind their way through the streets of London. Whether you want to join in the fun or simply watch the crowds go by, don’t miss the chance to be part of one of London’s biggest and best annual events.

No. 9 29th August to 9th September “BT London Live” in Trafalgar Square

relocates for the London 2012 Paralympic Games, bringing its programme of music and activities to the London landmark. See live coverage of the Paralympic Games between 11am-11.30pm every day at Trafalgar Square, where it will be broadcast on a huge screen. Live music concerts will take place every evening, and you’ll be able to try a range of Paralympic sports.

No.10. 29th August “London 2012 Paralympic Games Opening Ceremony”

Cheer on the competitors at the eagerly-awaited Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Paralympic Games. Almost a month since the start of Olympic action, the eyes of the world will continue to be on London as the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 Paralympic Games takes place.
