Where are the best Hotels to Stay in London

We are always asked if we can recommend good Hotels in the best locations.

Usually the first thing a client asks us when we are driving them to their Hotel is, “Is my Hotel well positioned and how far is it from the main sites of London”.

Well this article hopes to make some suggestions for you as to where to stay, and give you some idea of the location of the hotel in proximity of to its surrounding area.

Now we have not put these hotels into any particular preference, only that all the properties mentioned all offer a good position for shops, restaurants, sites, night life, etc..

First Hotel is The Langham, 1C Portland,London, W1B 1JA  0207 636 1000

This is a five star Hotel, and is situated right opposite the BBC radio, Broadcasting House. It is at the top of Regent Street.

As you come out of the Hotel, if you turn left you are heading towards, Regents Park and London Zoo, Madame Tussauds, Baker Street. If you go in the other direction (right) you are heading for the main shopping district (Oxford St, Regent St, Bond St). You are also heading towards Piccadilly Circus, which will take about 30 minutes to walk to. There are lots of local cafés and restaurants right around the corner from the Hotel. All in all great if you want to be near shops, no good for the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, or Tower of London.

Next try The Mayfair Hotel, Stratton Street, Mayfair, W1J 8LT. Now this Hotel is just round the corner from Berkley Square and a five minute walk from Piccadilly. Near lots off shops (Bond Street), just up the road to Green Park and about 20 minute walk to Buckingham Palace. For those that like to gamble the Palm Beach Casino is just round the corner. Very centrally located and about 30 minute walk to Harrods or 10 minutes in a cab. All in all a very central 5 star Hotel.

Piccadilly Circus is famous for the Eros statue, but Piccadilly itself is the name of a Street. Right by Eros on Piccadilly is The Meridien Hotel, 21 Piccadilly, W1J 0BH 020 7734 8000. This is 4/5 star hotel right in the centre of everything. Great location and well within walking distance to most sights. For position you can’t get much better.

If you want to splash out there is of course London’s famous 5 Star Ritz Hotel, Located right on Piccadilly, you can’t get a much better position in London. Just 20 minute walk to Harrods, 5 minutes to Piccadilly Circus, 15 minutes to Buckingham Palace, 10 minutes to Hyde Park and surrounded by restaurants and shops, and the underground railway 2 minutes away.

Not far from Piccadilly is The Sofitel, 6 Waterloo Place, SW1Y 4AN   0207 747 2200

This a lovely traditional English 5 star Hotel that is ideally located it is just round the corner from  Trafalgar Square, and is within easy walking distance of Buckingham Palace, Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square. This establishment is in a quiet location but still not too far from everything.

For something right in the heart of London there is the new W boutique Hotel, 10 Wardour Street, Leicester Square, W1D 6QF   0207 758 1000.

This Hotel is right by London’s China town and just one minute from Leister square. If you want to feel the real buzz of London this is the place for you with everything right on top of you , Restaurants, Shops, Theatres, Clubs,  Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar square, Soho, Houses of Parliament, Trafalgar square all within a short walk. This Hotel is in a great location, highly recommended.

If you actually want to stay really close to Trafalgar Square there is the Trafalgar Hilton,  2 Spring Gardens | Trafalgar Square,  SW1A 2TS. This Hotel is situated right opposite the square. This location is ideal for Piccadilly Circus, Buckingham palace, Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, and not far from the Thames embankment for cruises up the river. All these places are all with in a 10 to 15 minute walk from the Hotel.

For something that is up the other end of town and a little closer to Hyde Park I suggest Grosvenor House Marriott. The Hotel is located on Park Lane and is actually opposite the Park.

Just up the road from this Hotel is London’s famous Marble Arch, and with Stores like Selfridges, John Lewis and Fenwicks all on Oxford Street which is a stone’s throw away, and with some top restaurants not far away this is a great place to stay. A very luxurious 5 star Hotel and just up the road from here are The London Hilton, The Dorchester and The Intercontinental Hotels. As this establishment is closer to the shops than the others, this is why I have given it our vote but all are well located and highly recommended.

Staying in this area there is also The Cumberland Hotel, Great Cumberland Place   W1C 1LZ    0871 376 9014. This Hotel is just round the corner from Hyde Park, Marble arch and Oxford Street. Great place to stay if you want to go shopping. Very close to Marble Arch underground Station that gives you the option of travelling to other sites (like Tower of London) by underground.

Finally quite a few clients have asked about the British Museum, well nearby to this building is the Radisson Edwardian on Bloomsbury Street. This Hotel is located near what is known in London as Theatre land and quite close to Covent Garden. It is not quite as good a position as the others mentioned but it depends what you are looking for. It is not near any of the main attractions except the museum, however if you don’t mind walking a lot or taking a cab then this Hotel will be fine. It is not to far from Oxford Street, so quite good for shopping. It will also probably be a little cheaper than some of the others mentioned. Please note this chain also have a hotel in Leicester Square itself, so it might be worth looking at that one as well.
